The short answer
- Cheapest simple data: Airalo's fixed-data Japan plans start at $4.00 for 1 GB.
- Heavy data without counting gigabytes: Holafly sells unlimited data priced purely by days; Klook's unlimited listings allow 10 GB/day at full speed before throttling.
- Reusable, top-up-anywhere: Ubigi — top up in the app even with no data left, and reuse one eSIM on later trips.
- All four are data-only — no Japanese phone number, no voice or SMS. Check eSIM support before you buy.

Airalo's Japan eSIM ("Moshi Moshi") runs on SoftBank and KDDI (au) with 5G listed; validity starts when the eSIM first connects in the coverage area, per its activation policy. Ubigi lists 5G, allows data sharing, and its eSIM is reusable across trips. Ubigi's official pages checked do not name its Japanese carrier — flagged here rather than guessed.

Which to pick, by trip type
- Long weekend, light use: Airalo 3 GB / 7 days ($8.00) or 5 GB / 7 days ($10.00).
- Classic 10–14 day first trip: Airalo 10 GB / 30 days ($18.00) for moderate use; Ubigi 25 GB / 30 days ($32.00) if you upload video or tether.
- Heavy streamer / remote worker: prefer a published fair-use line — Airalo spells out 3 GB/day then 1 Mbps; Klook 10 GB/day then 128 kbps; Holafly publishes no threshold.
- Repeat visitor: Ubigi's reusable eSIM and out-of-data top-up remove per-trip setup.
- No eSIM in your phone: you need a physical SIM or pocket Wi-Fi instead (future guide).
Gotchas before you pay
- Validity clocks differ. Airalo starts on first connection in the coverage area; others may start on installation. The product page's activation policy is the document that counts.
- "Unlimited" always has a line — published (Airalo, Klook) or not (Holafly).
- No phone number. SMS codes and voice-call bookings will not work.
- Install on home Wi-Fi. Airport-Wi-Fi activation is the classic first-day failure.
